Alright.Buttake a pregnancy test?One airline tried that, and has been mired in controversy ever since.This week, Iberia airlines, which is based in Spain, announced that it would no longer require its female job candidates to take a pregnancy test. Whats behind the decision? Well, the company welches fined 25,000 euros, or $28,000, for gender discrimination, according to The New York Times.Although the airline will bedrngnis appeal the fine, Iberia defended its practice, saying it welches for the safety of its employees so that employees would not be assigned tasks that endangered their health or that of the fetus. Doctors advise pregnant women not to fly in their final trimester due to medica l risks like blood clots and deep vein thrombosis from cabin pressure. After Ladders contacted Iberia, the airlines press office said it was specifically following a Spanish royal decree, which limits the activities pregnant workers can do. Under the decree, pregnant workers cannot be exposed to heavy manual labor, extreme noise, cold and heat and non-iodizing radiation.There are additional reasons that the airline may have wanted to limit pregnant women from flying. Iberia says that it applies International Air Transport Association rules to employees. On page 37 of its medical manual, the IATA suggests cautions for pregnant women in order to avoid the effects of cosmic radiation. Long-haul flights expose flyers to cosmic radiation, which cannot be shielded like X-rays can the only way to reduce it, the IATA suggest, is by reducing the altitude of the entire plane.The IATA says regulations requires airlines to reduce the dose of cosmic radiation received by the foetus to a level as low as reasonably achievable. As a result, a number of European airlines have made the decision to assign all female flight and cabin crew members to ground duties on declaration of pregnancy. Iberia said cabin crew members get reassigned when they tell the airline they are pregnant.Research says, however, that flight attendants dont have miscarriages any more often than teachers do.In a statement, the airline said it will no longer include the pregnancy test in the medical examination prior to the hiring that was only done to ensure that they were not at risk.There is no reason to justify itBut the Balearic Islands government and union officials werent buying Iberias justification. The only pregnant applicant who got rejected was because she failed a plane-driving test, not because she was pregnant, Iberia said.The case, however, hinged on a simple standard there was no way a male employee could take the same test.Airlines in general are struggling with gender discrimination issues related to their employees. In April, two female Aeroflot flight attendants sued the Russian carrier for enforcing a weight and appearance guideline. The flight attendants who failed this test were pulled from doing prestigious international long-haul flights and had their pay docked.Aeroflot won both court cases. Aeroflot is a premium airline and part of the reason people pay for tickets is the appearance of its employees, Aerofl ots public council member Pavel Danilin said in its unapologetic defense.In May, two Frontier flight attendants sued their airline because they said they were not allowed to pump breast milk on duty. The flight attendants were required to work 10-12 hour shifts but were not given the time or space to pump milk, the federal complaint alleged.And United faced resistance earlier this year when it was revealed that the airline has a dress-code policy of banning leggings for employees and their relatives. When was the last time you heard that in a job interview, a casual conversation or anywhere else, for that matter?In my experience, such virtually universal filial gratitude has been unique (even though I can cite numerous examples of intense family devotion in the many Asian countries I have visited or lived in, including Japan, and some here in the West).Cultural Factors Generational Contrasts, Confucian Piety and The Rectification of NamesAmong the reasons for that career goal and extreme loyalty and gratitude to parents areStark lifestyle contrasts between parent and child Many of those struggling parents (like those in these home photos taken by one university scholarship student, Miya, whom I came to know) did and do have to get up at 3 a.m. and leave their simple cottages, in all weather, to wearily cart and sell vegetables by the side of some road, hoping to cobble together enough of an income to clothe and educate their children.When notlage on the road, those parents are in the fields or in their Spartan, often no more than two-room house (plus hearth), doing what must be done and making do with what little they have, which may include a lot of plain porridge and rice, but rarely fresh meat or vegetables.The average rural Chinese family income? $200 per month, for a lifestyle that, in very many instances, still lacks indoor toilets, any bath, central heating, real roads, private space or a real stovenot to mention any car, HDTV screen, take-out pizza, Apple co mputers or summers at poolside for the kids or anyone else in the family.A CHINESE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS MOM, THRESHING GRAINGratitude of children toward parents is far likelier when it is so painfully and movingly obvious that the childlike so many of the Chinese students whom I got to knowis enjoying a faraway urban university lifestyle that her countryside parents can only dream of, and then only for their children.Ironically and in contrast, because so many baby-boomer Western parents have enjoyed home-owning and vacationing lifestyles that their two-job, student-loan burdened, underemployed graduate offspring can now only dream of, many modern kids and job seekers may feel that there are fewer, if any, parental sacrifices to acknowledge and repay.This suggests that instead of complaining that some modern kid or employee in the West is an ingrate for not making parental payback a high priority, we take comfort in knowing that at least many more of their parents were ab le to raise them without the kinds of crushing sacrifices that Chinese peasant parents have had to make.(Cynics will take their comfort in the view that all parental investment, however burdensome, is undertaken with some payoff expectedin the form of grandchildren or retirement care. But, lets not go there, here.)Confucian emphasis on filial duty, rather than on rights It may be argued that one reason China has been accused of lagging in recognition and enforcement of human and other rights is that its Confucian culture has traditionally emphasized duty over rights, in particular, the duty of children toward parents and the duty of the individual to his or her family. What counts, in that scheme of things, are an individuals duties, not his or her rights.a view that makes sense in a traditionally purely agrarian society characterized by close-knit family farming.This emphasis on duties does, on the positive side of the ethical and cultural ledger, have one edifying aspect In many i nteractions, the Chineselike the Japaneseare more likely to get and exchange what they want by packaging interactions with others as exercises in obligations, rather than as an exercise of rights.For example, consider how we, here at home in the West, get what we want I have a CD that you really like you have one that Id like to have. The second party, having the same code of behavior and feelings, will also offer to give his or hers as a no-strings gift..Materially, both the Western and Far Eastern deal-makers have gotten what they wanted someone elses CD. Psychologically, however, the two deals couldnt be more differentThe Westerner has, through an exercise of his or h er rights, namely, entitlement to something in a fair exchange, gotten what was wanted and owed. The Asian, through fulfillment of his or her duty, as an obligation to consider the wants and needs of others, got what (s)he wanted, by giving demanded only by conscience, not by the contractual, enforceable expectations of the other party.The Asian gets a bonus with the CD the warm feeling that someone has chosen to give something because it was the right and caring thing to do, not because it was expected as contractual fulfillment and exercise of self-asserted rights, with sanctions for non-compliance.When duties (such as the obligation to refrain from smoking), rather than rights (such as the right to demand that someone stop smoking) drive interactions, both parties are left with something to feel good about I did my duty and feel good about that you admire and respect me for it.Nothing remotely like that happens when we Westerners merely assert, defend and exercise our rights as e xercises in self-interest.The Rectification of Names Reinforcing this Confucian devotion to parents is a second Confucian doctrine the rectification of names (??zheng ming). This second pillar of Confucianism is the belief that, for the purpose of social and cosmic order, we must act in conformity to and live up to our names, titles and labels. A daughter or son who does not revere and honor his or her parents fails to live up to the expectations of the family name or the designation daughter or son.Hence, it should not be so surprising that Chinese children more readily and gladly acknowledge a duty to repay their parents than their Western counterparts. Failure to do so means failing to live up to ones name and labelwhich makes the child a living contradiction. Nayar, professor of computer science at Columbia Universitys Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, thought about what would be useful devices for visual communication in the digital age, he zeroed in on what he later described as an eternal video camera, one that could power itself and communicate information wirelessly and conceivably operate forever. After several years of work, the engineer known for his expertise in computer vision, computer graphics, and computational cameras has invented a prototype of the first fully self-powered video camera. He and his gruppe, which includes research engineer Daniel Sims, a recent graduate in mechanical engineering from Columbia, and consultant Mikhail Fridberg, have redesigned a pixel that can not only measure incident light but that can also convert the incident light into electric power that ansturms the camera. Nayar says this is just the tip of th e iceberg. Digital imaging is expected to enable many emerging fields including wearable devices, sensor networks, smart environments, personalized medicine, and the Internet of Things. A camera that can function as an untethered device forever, without any external power supply, would be incredibly useful, he notes.A video camera based on a self-powered image sensor can run indefinitely without an external power supply. Noting that its hard to actually identifythe point in time when his idea took shape, Nayar says his thoughts went something like this Im acutely aware cameras measure light, and light is also used to generate energy. Im also aware t hat it would be very useful to have devices that can produce visual information, which is what cameras do, and have them distributed in space whether in a smart environment or the Internet of Things. There are all kinds of applications where you want a camera to be a stand-alone device. My thinking was, How does one enable a camera to harvest energy for itself without adding in any substantial way to the cost or the size of the camera? What that means is that the imaging itself should be able to harvest energy. That was the beginning of the process. Nayar drew upon his knowledge that although digital cameras and solar panels have different purposes, both are constructed with one common key component a photodiode. In a digital camera, in which the photodiode is a key enabling device in a pixel, the brightness of the light is measured. In a solar panel, the photodiode converts incident light to electric power.An image sensor that can capture images and harvest energy, enabling it to r un indefinitely without a battery. Others looking to achieve the same goal have proposed that the pixels of the image sensor be divided into some that measure light and others that harvest energy. But that sacrifices valuable real estate with those sensors behaving like a solar panel, he says. Using off-the-shelf components, the team did its first test of the redesigned pixel with a single pixel to confirm that within a reasonable time, it can take a measurement and also harvest energy. After that successful test, the team built a 5x5 array on a printed circuit board, and then built the 30x40 prototype housed in a 3D printed body to demonstrate the proof of concept. We chose that size not because there were any restrictions with respect to the number of pixels, b ut because it was on a printed circuit board, and each pixel had to be mounted, Nayar says. It would be incredibly expensive if it were larger, and you dont want to invest in a chip because of the expense to fabricate for a prototype. Once the approach worked in the 30x40 size, they knew it could be mapped to a chip. There, it can be any number of pixels without affecting the cost. The next step is to miniaturize and make it a chip. When you reduce the size of the image sensor and make it the size of a chip in a mobile phone, it receives less light and will harvest less, but the power consumption goes down too, and the team is hopeful they can produce even higher resolution. Nayar is hesitant to make any predictions about commercialization. He sees it as a moving target and not because of technological barriers. It can be more about inserting them into products that have been planned for the next five years, and thats driven by various market factors, he says. Its more about finding the right applications, and to a certain extent it will depend on how certain emerging fields evolve the Internet of Things, smart environments, wide area surveillance and monitoring, and what their needs are. Hopefully you’re hopping into this stretch with a confident step. But, if you’re not that’s normal, too- you’ll probably want to read this and this to get your nerves under control. Odds are that you’re reading this because you’ve been asked to write a self-review before your formal one. Or, if not that, your boss is sending vague requests like, “Plan on discussing your progress this year. Bring a few examples on paper.” This can be intimidating- maybe you’re not sure what to talk about, or maybe you’re a horrible writer and can’t imagine churning out complete sentences about yourself, or maybe you’re unsure of how honest you should really be. Don’t stress- here’s everything you need to know. What’s a Self-Review? As the name suggests, this is your opportunity to look back on and document your past performance as well as pave the way for future growth and opportunity in your current role. What makes a good self-review? “One that’s honest and admits both your wins and any shortcomings- and not just if there were shortcomings, but how you grew from them and how you would do things differently,” says The Muse’s Director of HR Shannon Fitzgerald. Why Do Companies Do Them? No one knows what you do on a daily basis better than you, so companies want to hear it straight from you. Since it’s considered in tandem with your manager’s review (and sometimes even peer reviews), it helps HR see whether you’re keeping up with your responsibilities and if any red flags need to be addressed. And, it brings in an element of fairness by letting you tell your story (and not just taking your manager’s word for it). “We’re looking to see consistency between the manager and employee. If the manager says one thing and the employee says another thing then there’s a disconnect that we need to intervene,” says Fitzgerald. HR might also look for trends. Has the employee mentioned a certain type of feedback several times? Or hinted at getting a promotion for the past couple cycles? These signs are worth looking into. HR might also look for trends. If you walk into your meeting with solid answers to the above when your boss just asked you to “start thinking about the wins and losses of the past year,” you’ll instantly look like someone who takes their career seriously and should be considered an all-star on the team. Now, in terms of actually putting pen to paper, Fitzgerald suggests starting with bullet points and building a story from there. If you’re not sure what you’ve done, turn to documentation for reference- emails, your calendar, meeting agendas, to-do lists, notes from your check-ins or one-on-ones. And it doesn’t have to be done in one sitting. As soon as you’re done, wait and read it again the next morning and see if it still holds true.” The last point is key: Make sure you’ve looked it over with fresh eyes before submitting it. Oh, and another point- don’t lie. One, because your company can’t help with what they don’t know. And two, you’re human, so you definitely have room to grow and your boss probably has a few thoughts on those areas. So, you look far more professional if you point them out before they do. “I’ve had people say, ‘Why wouldn’t I just always put a glowing review? Why would I want my manager to think any less of me?’ But if you put something really glowing but you have areas you need to improve on, it may just look like you have a potentially serious blindspot,” says Fitzgerald. Tip #1 Explain your accomplishments: Your resume is a marketing document, not a list of job descriptions.Your reader doesnt want to see what you did on a daily basis they want to see results and measurable outcomes indicating past performance. Think hard facts and data driven results. When you are describing the job that you performed, phrase it in terms of accomplishments. When you hear a politician talk about their record, youll notice they dont say, When I was governor, I cast votes, signed executive orders, and presided over ceremonies. Instead, they say, When I was governor, I lowered taxes, increased equality, etc.. Talk about your record, not the fact that you did something you were supposed to do anyway. Tip #2 Dont include an objective/summary statement: Unless youre changing your career path entirely, consider forgoing the objective statement. Why? Because the objective statement eats up valuable real estate and says nothing about you as a candidate. Recruiters and hiring managers read through countless resumes every day and each objective statement sounds exactly like the last one. Including one wont help you stand out. The one exception is if you are going to take the time to craft an  individualized objective statement for each job to which you apply. Tip #3 Your Resume can (and should) be more than one page: Unless youre right out of college, theres no reason for your resume to be just one page. I was contracted to teach Executive Core Qualifications writing. But then we started talking about writing NSPS Self-Assessments and Job Objectives (JOs), and this topic was one of great interest. I told the class of supervisors and executives that I had just written two newsletter articles on a technique for writing the job objectives in the SMART format by using a vacancy announcement. They were intrigued, so I showed them my two articles and my analysis of the SMART JOs. I asked the class, How many of you have your JOs written in the SMART format? Nobody raised their hand. They said, We cant figure out how to do it. I admitted that the SMART JOs were hard even for me to write. We started talking about the mandatory Supervisory JO, which is not in the SMART format. I recommended that we take the Supervisory JO and make it SMART, just for writing and thinking about your accomplishments. What I had was a better offer from another employer. But was that enough to break my commitment and upset my new company? Between 10 and 25 percent of employees leave their jobs within the first six months, according to a   2017 survey performed by Korn Ferry . You might have accepted the first offer because it seemed better on the surface, or because you desperately needed income to cover something like student loan payments . Now you might be trying to leave because of one or more of these facts: My situation was more nuanced. The better offer on the table wasn’t better because of the salary. I was actually   considering a steep pay-cut . No, the offer was preferable, in part, because it offered something my current employer couldn’t: the ability to work remotely. Most of the dozen human resource managers, career coaches and recruiters I interviewed over email for this story weren’t on my side. They said my situation was avoidable - that by jumping from a job so quickly I risked burning bridges and tarnishing reputations . After all, leaving put my employer in a bad spot. They had already sent rejection letters to other candidates, invested time in onboarding me and even paid me while I was away for a two-week vacation. To lessen the collateral damage, I would have been better off leaving within one month, said   career consultant Tiffani Murray . “At 60 days or 90 days, this is definitely a different story, and leaving on the closer side of 90 to 180 days might leave you with a poor reputation,” Murray said. “They may feel you continued to look [for jobs] after you accepted the role.” In my case, there was some explaining to do. I spent hours preparing what I’d say to my manager. Delivering the message in person was a must. During a scheduled check-in, I didn’t just walk my manager through the decision. I gave her a (true) story to share with other managers and executives who would be disappointed by my departure. “Be brutally honest, yet polite, about why the other offer is more attractive to you,” Murray said on her advice for others in a similar situation. “Let them know if it is the title, role, scope of responsibility, decrease or increase in travel , salary, incentives, commute or a combination of benefits and other decision points.” Also, be prepared for your company to try to keep you. When I told mine, for example, that I valued working from home for family reasons, my manager’s manager pulled me aside. You can work from anywhere you want, he said. Not liking the idea of being the one remote employee at a large company with a physical office, I didn’t budge. Of course, I also expressed my regret for the timing and my gratitude for the opportunity. Instead of giving the traditional two week’s notice, I yielded the power to pick my last day. It was the absolute least I could do. Having long stints on your resume is a nice plus. It shows your level of commitment. But staying in one place for years isn’t an option for everyone. In fact, 25 percent of millennials   surveyed by Deloitte in 2016  said they expected to move to a new job within 12 months. Leaving as quickly as I did, however, could be avoided. You don’t want to create the impression that you’re not a committed person, and you don’t want to leave wreckage in your wake. When looking for employment, applying and interviewing for multiple jobs simultaneously is ideal. This puts you in a better position to   make informed comparisons between offers . Be prepared for some companies’ hiring processes to move slower. That’s partly why I ended up in the position I did. Also, your interviewers might ask if you’re applying for other jobs. They’re trying to read your urgency. Saying yes (if that’s the case) tells them that they might need to act faster to bring you on board. You’ll want to avoid the perception that you’re leveraging one offer for another, but try to remain open and honest during the process. Nancy Noto, former director of people at Mic , said that if your preferred company is slower to make an offer, tell them about the less desirable offer you have on the table. “ Typically if the company is serious about the candidate, they will speed up their internal processes,” she said. If they don’t, you’ll have your answer about where you’re truly wanted. Treat your next series of job interviews as if you’re the interviewer.   Ace the hiring manager’s questions , sure, but carve out as much time as possible to ask your own. Learn about the company’s workplace dynamic, people and internal struggles. The last two times I received job offers, for example, I leveraged those offers into more time to research the companies. I requested to speak with a current employee over the phone and looked up employee reviews on   Glassdoor . You might also consider spending a day shadowing colleagues in the office to get a better sense of how you’d fit. If your situation is unavoidable, you can do as I did and cut the cord on a new job, risking the fallout. But you might also consider a less damaging workaround. “Ask your future employer to give you some more time,” said Peter Yang, co-founder of   ResumeGo . “Tell them about your situation and that you’d like to stay with your current company for a couple [of] extra months to avoid any negative feelings or backlash.” It’s not a perfect solution, but let’s face it: There’s no perfect solution for this predicament. Being transparent with your current and prospective companies can stop you from blindsiding them. Excellence-seeking perfectionists demand high standards not only for themselves, but for the people around them. Those with this type tend to get more of the positive effects of perfectionism.Failure-avoiding perfectionists, on the other hands, are more motivated by the idea that they are not good enough, and that they will lose face if they aren’t perfect. Those types tend to inherit more of the negative aspects of perfectionism. I got the idea that my son and I should take a hike and explore the great outdoors. The sky was blue and the weather was clear and bright. After a quick lunch, we headed out.Some kind of majestic  chairWe drove into the state park and found suitable parking. Shoelaces tied and with a spring in our step, we began our adventure. A friend who was visiting us from Oregon came along. He happened to be a survivalist and very experienced in the outdoors.As we trudged deeper into the forest our friend pointed out different animal tracks and plants of interest. My son took it all in with great interest despite his young age. We snacked along the way from our travel packs, downed some water and wandered into a bit of a clearing.In front of us was the huge stump of an old redwood, waiting for us like some kind of majestic chair. I glanced at my son and said, “Come on!”I hoisted him up and together we stood atop the flattened platform of the grand old tree stump. I struck a dramatic pose and announced loudly, “To infinity, and beyond!” in my best Buzz Lightyear voice.My son followed suit with an outstretched arm and war cry of his own. It was one of those special moments when you feel great and simply enjoy the magic of life. Kind of like Buzz Lightyear.Thankfully, our friend captured the moment with his camera.Form an invincible hostObligations, responsibilities, and worries are always nipping at our heels. Sometimes it might even feel like the wolf is at our door.No one can predict when calamity may strike in our lives. But there are also moments of sheer delight and happiness. Times when everything is right and the stars align perfectly. The trick is to conjure the conditions and opportunities that allow for such moments.“Your success and happiness lie in you. Into what became a magical land of sights, sounds, and possibilities.We all need to grab our loved ones and go to infi nity, and beyond. Doing so will change your life. For example, don’t say, “My position was eliminated.” Instead say, “MORE THAN X number of positions were eliminated as a result of this business decision.”“If the reason for the leave was political or personal, I coach the client based on the exact situation,” Safani said. “For example, if it was political, I may recommend they say that management changed and they wanted to bring in their own team. If it was personal, I may suggest they say that the direction of the position changed and was no longer well-suited for (me).”
