A Self-Powered Video Camera
A Self-Powered Video Camera A Self-Powered Video Camera As Dr. Shree K. Nayar, professor of computer science at Columbia Universitys Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, thought about what would be useful devices for visual communication in the digital age, he zeroed in on what he later described as an eternal video camera, one that could power itself and communicate information wirelessly and conceivably operate forever. After several years of work, the engineer known for his expertise in computer vision, computer graphics, and computational cameras has invented a prototype of the first fully self-powered video camera. He and his gruppe, which includes research engineer Daniel Sims, a recent graduate in mechanical engineering from Columbia, and consultant Mikhail Fridberg, have redesigned a pixel that can not only measure incident light but that can also convert the incident light into electric power that ansturms the camera. Nayar says this is just the tip of th e iceberg. Digital imaging is expected to enable many emerging fields including wearable devices, sensor networks, smart environments, personalized medicine, and the Internet of Things. A camera that can function as an untethered device forever, without any external power supply, would be incredibly useful, he notes.A video camera based on a self-powered image sensor can run indefinitely without an external power supply. Image Computer Vision Laboratory, Columbia Engineering The measurement of light happens very quickly (in milliseconds), while harvesting happens over a longer time. The mode we have it running in now is alternating. You measure an image and then you harvest, he says. The camera can produce an image each second of a well-lit indoor scene. Noting that its hard to actually identifythe point in time when his idea took shape, Nayar says his thoughts went something like this Im acutely aware cameras measure light, and light is also used to generate energy. Im also aware t hat it would be very useful to have devices that can produce visual information, which is what cameras do, and have them distributed in space whether in a smart environment or the Internet of Things. There are all kinds of applications where you want a camera to be a stand-alone device. My thinking was, How does one enable a camera to harvest energy for itself without adding in any substantial way to the cost or the size of the camera? What that means is that the imaging itself should be able to harvest energy. That was the beginning of the process. Nayar drew upon his knowledge that although digital cameras and solar panels have different purposes, both are constructed with one common key component a photodiode. In a digital camera, in which the photodiode is a key enabling device in a pixel, the brightness of the light is measured. In a solar panel, the photodiode converts incident light to electric power. An image sensor that can capture images and harvest energy, enabling it to r un indefinitely without a battery. Image Computer Vision Laboratory, Columbia Engineering My thinking was Can you redesign the pixel itself so that in a seamless way it will be able to serve both roles either at the same time or at different times? he notes. Others looking to achieve the same goal have proposed that the pixels of the image sensor be divided into some that measure light and others that harvest energy. But that sacrifices valuable real estate with those sensors behaving like a solar panel, he says. Using off-the-shelf components, the team did its first test of the redesigned pixel with a single pixel to confirm that within a reasonable time, it can take a measurement and also harvest energy. After that successful test, the team built a 5x5 array on a printed circuit board, and then built the 30x40 prototype housed in a 3D printed body to demonstrate the proof of concept. We chose that size not because there were any restrictions with respect to the number of pixels, b ut because it was on a printed circuit board, and each pixel had to be mounted, Nayar says. It would be incredibly expensive if it were larger, and you dont want to invest in a chip because of the expense to fabricate for a prototype. Once the approach worked in the 30x40 size, they knew it could be mapped to a chip. There, it can be any number of pixels without affecting the cost. The next step is to miniaturize and make it a chip. When you reduce the size of the image sensor and make it the size of a chip in a mobile phone, it receives less light and will harvest less, but the power consumption goes down too, and the team is hopeful they can produce even higher resolution. Nayar is hesitant to make any predictions about commercialization. He sees it as a moving target and not because of technological barriers. It can be more about inserting them into products that have been planned for the next five years, and thats driven by various market factors, he says. Its more about finding the right applications, and to a certain extent it will depend on how certain emerging fields evolve the Internet of Things, smart environments, wide area surveillance and monitoring, and what their needs are. And when the team set up the camera, and it just started running without any power going into it and began producing imaging? I must say it was kind of cool, he says. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion A camera that can function as an untethered device forever- without any external power supply- would be incredibly useful.Prof. Shree K. Learn About SMS and MMS Messages
Learn About dienst fr kurznachrichten and MMS MessagesLearn About SMS and MMS MessagesSMS (short message service) and MMS (multimedia messaging service) are both abbreviations for types of text messages. SMS is the original text message format, only allows you to send plain text messages, and has a maximum of 160 characters. MMS, the next-generation version of text messaging, allows you to send multimedia content including photos, videos, audio files, and so on. It represents a huge leap forward in text message marketing possibilities you can think of it as the difference between placing an ad in the newspaper and running a commercial on TV. Mobile Marketing Thus far fruchtwein mobile marketing in the US has been through SMS, with MMS representing a fairly small percentage of the whole. But as smartphones have become a much bigger percentage of the total cellphone market, MMS marketing has become more and more useful. Its still more expensive than the equivalent SMS campaign so its best reserved for projects for which you expect a high rate of return. In the US, multimedia messaging is most often used to send photos back and forth between consumers, but it has been used for marketing campaigns by some fairly major businesses. For example, a few years ago Samsung sent out an MMS ad offering a free demo of a new game. The Ad Response Rate vs. Conversion Rate According to WirelessWeek, the ad received a 15% response rate and a 2% conversion rate. In Germany, BMW launched an even more successful MMS campaign selling snow tires. The company sent customers a photo, culled from CRMdata, of how their existing car would look with the new tires installed. A significant hitch for MMS marketing occurred when Apple released the iPhone lacking the capability to send or receive MMS messages. However, due to popular demand, Apple added MMS to its iPhone OS in 2009, and iPhone owners now account for a large percentage of total MMS use. Because MMS marketing is relative ly expensive compared to SMS marketing, and because only mobile devices with color screens can receive MMS messages, multimedia messaging is best used as just one aspect of your total mobile marketing program. Using SMS to Make Contact and Then Switching to MMS One option would be to use SMS to make contact with cold leads and then switch to MMS once they confirm that they want to hear from your company (and have an MMS-capable device). Or you could promote only high-end products and services with MMS since the potential return on each message you send would be higher. Of course, you arent limited to just sending MMS messages you can also make it part of your campaign receive them from your customers. Businesses have generated tons of excitement and interest with picture-to-screen campaigns to their existing customers, in which the company asks customers to send in a particular photo (say, one of the customers using their product) and the company then displays this photo on the ir website. Some retailers, such as Walmart, display the customer photos on TV screens at their retail locations. On a smaller scale, you can hold contests offering prizes to customers who send in specific images again, this is often a photo of someone using one of your products. Sending Animated Greetings Another common use of MMS is to send animated greeting cards to customers. This is a great campaign to hold during the holidays, but its even more effective to send an e-card on your customers birthday or the anniversary of her first purchase from you. You can also include a special offer with the card, such as a coupon for her next purchase. If you use photos and other images into your mobile marketing, be very careful to use only images for which you hold the full rights. Using unlicensed photos in a marketing campaign can launch you into a legal nightmare of epic proportions. If you dont snap the photos yourself, stick with fully licensed images.

How to Write a Performance Self-Review (Template) - The Muse
How to Write a Performance Self-Review (Template) - The Muse How to Write a Performance Self-Review (Template) Ah, performance review season! Hopefully youâre hopping into this stretch with a confident step. But, if youâre not thatâs normal, too- youâll probably want to read this and this to get your nerves under control. Odds are that youâre reading this because youâve been asked to write a self-review before your formal one. Or, if not that, your boss is sending vague requests like, âPlan on discussing your progress this year. Bring a few examples on paper.â This can be intimidating- maybe youâre not sure what to talk about, or maybe youâre a horrible writer and canât imagine churning out complete sentences about yourself, or maybe youâre unsure of how honest you should really be. Donât stress- hereâs everything you need to know. Whatâs a Self-Review? As the name suggests, this is your opportunity to look back on and document your past performance as well as pave the way for future growth and opportunity in your current role. What makes a good self-review? âOne thatâs honest and admits both your wins and any shortcomings- and not just if there were shortcomings, but how you grew from them and how you would do things differently,â says The Museâs Director of HR Shannon Fitzgerald. Why Do Companies Do Them? No one knows what you do on a daily basis better than you, so companies want to hear it straight from you. Since itâs considered in tandem with your managerâs review (and sometimes even peer reviews), it helps HR see whether youâre keeping up with your responsibilities and if any red flags need to be addressed. And, it brings in an element of fairness by letting you tell your story (and not just taking your managerâs word for it). âWeâre looking to see consistency between the manager and employee. If the manager says one thing and the employee says another thing then thereâs a disconnect that we need to intervene,â says Fitzgerald. HR might also look for trends. Has the employee mentioned a certain type of feedback several times? Or hinted at getting a promotion for the past couple cycles? These signs are worth looking into. HR might also look for trends. Has the employee mentioned a certain type of feedback several times? Or hinted at getting a promotion for the past couple cycles? These signs are worth looking into. Your manager is also looking at your self-review to see how you want to grow. So, the more you can provide, the easier itâll be for your boss to take action and help you get there. How Will it Benefit Me? For one thing, itâs a great way to track your accomplishments and goals and have them all in one place. For another thing, itâs a nice chance for you to become more self-aware. By having to actually list out what youâve done, where you want to be, and how youâll get there, youâre putting your career into perspective and giving yourself a chance to really carve out your path. Maybe youâre struggling to work well with your boss, or prioritize assignments, or hit deadlines. You can use your self-review as a chance to explain yourself but also bring these problems to light so they can be resolved. Finally, itâs a great jumping off point for improving a challenging situation. Maybe youâre struggling to work well with your boss, or prioritize assignments, or hit deadlines. You can use your self-review as a chance to explain yourself but also bring these problems to light so they can be resolved. How Do You Go About Writing One? Chances are if youâre asked to complete a self-review, HR has given you some direction or prompt to get started. However, if thatâs not the case, these questions are a great place to start: What projects have you enjoyed working on the most, and why? What projects are you most proud of? What are the things youâve learned? What are some things you would have done differently looking back? What has your boss done to help you do your job better? What could they do differently? Did you receive any feedback during the review period, either from your boss or your peers, that resonated with you? Why? What upcoming projects are you excited about? Do you feel like youâre adding skills to your resume? If not, what would you like to add? What areas would you want more feedback on? If you walk into your meeting with solid answers to the above when your boss just asked you to âstart thinking about the wins and losses of the past year,â youâll instantly look like someone who takes their career seriously and should be considered an all-star on the team. Now, in terms of actually putting pen to paper, Fitzgerald suggests starting with bullet points and building a story from there. If youâre not sure what youâve done, turn to documentation for reference- emails, your calendar, meeting agendas, to-do lists, notes from your check-ins or one-on-ones. If youâre not sure what youâve done, turn to documentation for reference- emails, your calendar, meeting agendas, to-do lists In addition, if you work collaboratively, email a few co-workers and ask them what accomplishments they can think of off the top of their head (and if you want to win all the self-awareness points, also ask them what area they think you can most improve in: skills and training, organization, or communication). Plus, you should âalways look back on the last review and what you said you would do,â adds Fitzgerald. Have you accomplished any of those goals? âItâs also helpful to talk it over with someone,â she suggests. âTalk to a friend about it, and after you organize your thoughts itâll be easier to just regurgitate on paper. And it doesnât have to be done in one sitting. As soon as youâre done, wait and read it again the next morning and see if it still holds true.â The last point is key: Make sure youâve looked it over with fresh eyes before submitting it. Oh, and another point- donât lie. One, because your company canât help with what they donât know. And two, youâre human, so you definitely have room to grow and your boss probably has a few thoughts on those areas. So, you look far more professional if you point them out before they do. âIâve had people say, âWhy wouldnât I just always put a glowing review? Why would I want my manager to think any less of me?â But if you put something really glowing but you have areas you need to improve on, it may just look like you have a potentially serious blindspot,â says Fitzgerald. Not to mention, a âperfectâ review also puts you in a tough place- youâll never be able to live up to it. So, itâs just easier to be honest and transparent. Want a little more help? We made this handy self-review worksheet thatâll make it way easier to get your thoughts on paper.

4 Tried and True Resume Tips
4 Tried and True Resume Tips 4 Tried and True Resume Tips This article is about the latter: honest advice that gives you the kind of resume hiring managers and recruiters want to see, and the tried and true resume tips that just plain work. Tip #1 Explain your accomplishments: Your resume is a marketing document, not a list of job descriptions.Your reader doesnt want to see what you did on a daily basis they want to see results and measurable outcomes indicating past performance. Think hard facts and data driven results. When you are describing the job that you performed, phrase it in terms of accomplishments. When you hear a politician talk about their record, youll notice they dont say, When I was governor, I cast votes, signed executive orders, and presided over ceremonies. Instead, they say, When I was governor, I lowered taxes, increased equality, etc.. Talk about your record, not the fact that you did something you were supposed to do anyway. Tip #2 Dont include an objective/summary statement: Unless youre changing your career path entirely, consider forgoing the objective statement. Why? Because the objective statement eats up valuable real estate and says nothing about you as a candidate. Recruiters and hiring managers read through countless resumes every day and each objective statement sounds exactly like the last one. Including one wont help you stand out. The one exception is if you are going to take the time to craft an individualized objective statement for each job to which you apply. Tip #3 Your Resume can (and should) be more than one page: Unless youre right out of college, theres no reason for your resume to be just one page. Elaborate on your accomplishments and provide details of your past experiences. The one page resume cliche is a novice mistake for seasoned professionals to be making. On the other hand, know that recruiters and hiring managers are busy two pages is a good maximum. Tip #4 Avoid useless and out of place information: Thats right, leave the fluff and the filler at the door. Dont say that you are a great communicator, exceptional and proactive negotiator, etc Get rid of soaring adverbs and any grandiose jargon what does any of it all mean anyway? Recruiters and hiring managers want to see hard facts, not a B-Movie poster. You dont hire someone because they say they are great you hire someone that you know has done great things or is capable of great things. Also, dont include personal data, business references, or salary requirements. Its unprofessional and may cost you the job. Finally as a word of closing, remember to sell yourself. This can be accomplished without the use of trickery and fanfare. At the same time, now is not the time for modesty. Be bold. Youre advertising a portrait of yourself, but your story must be proven instead of told an honest assessment of a qualified individual is all that interviewers are after.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. SMART Supervisory Job Objectives
SMART Supervisory Job Objectives SMART Supervisory Job Objectives SMART Supervisory Job Objectives Yesterday I was at US Army Sustainment Command in Davenport, Iowa. I was contracted to teach Executive Core Qualifications writing. But then we started talking about writing NSPS Self-Assessments and Job Objectives (JOs), and this topic was one of great interest. I told the class of supervisors and executives that I had just written two newsletter articles on a technique for writing the job objectives in the SMART format by using a vacancy announcement. They were intrigued, so I showed them my two articles and my analysis of the SMART JOs. I asked the class, How many of you have your JOs written in the SMART format? Nobody raised their hand. They said, We cant figure out how to do it. I admitted that the SMART JOs were hard even for me to write. We started talking about the mandatory Supervisory JO, which is not in the SMART format. I recommended that we take the Supervisory JO and make it SMART, just for writing and thinking about your accomplishments. Here is our SMART version of the mandatory Supervisory JO (this is a shortened version that I typed): STANDARD JOB OBJECTIVE: SUPERVISOR: Execute the full range of HR (including performance management) and fiscal responsibilities within established timelines and regulations. How to Handle a New Offer After Youve Just Taken a Job
How to Handle a New Offer After Youâve Just Taken a Job How to Handle a New Offer After Youâve Just Taken a Job If I was going to leave a job within three months of accepting it, I needed a damn good reason. What I had was a better offer from another employer. But was that enough to break my commitment and upset my new company? Between 10 and 25 percent of employees leave their jobs within the first six months, according to a 2017 survey performed by Korn Ferry . You might have accepted the first offer because it seemed better on the surface, or because you desperately needed income to cover something like student loan payments . Now you might be trying to leave because of one or more of these facts: My situation was more nuanced. The better offer on the table wasnât better because of the salary. I was actually considering a steep pay-cut . No, the offer was preferable, in part, because it offered something my current employer couldnât: the ability to work remotely. Most of the dozen human resource managers, career coaches and recruiters I interviewed over email for this story werenât on my side. They said my situation was avoidable - that by jumping from a job so quickly I risked burning bridges and tarnishing reputations . After all, leaving put my employer in a bad spot. They had already sent rejection letters to other candidates, invested time in onboarding me and even paid me while I was away for a two-week vacation. To lessen the collateral damage, I would have been better off leaving within one month, said career consultant Tiffani Murray . âAt 60 days or 90 days, this is definitely a different story, and leaving on the closer side of 90 to 180 days might leave you with a poor reputation,â Murray said. âThey may feel you continued to look [for jobs] after you accepted the role.â In my case, there was some explaining to do. I spent hours preparing what Iâd say to my manager. Delivering the message in person was a must. During a scheduled check-in, I didnât just walk my manager through the decision. I gave her a (true) story to share with other managers and executives who would be disappointed by my departure. âBe brutally honest, yet polite, about why the other offer is more attractive to you,â Murray said on her advice for others in a similar situation. âLet them know if it is the title, role, scope of responsibility, decrease or increase in travel , salary, incentives, commute or a combination of benefits and other decision points.â Also, be prepared for your company to try to keep you. When I told mine, for example, that I valued working from home for family reasons, my managerâs manager pulled me aside. You can work from anywhere you want, he said. Not liking the idea of being the one remote employee at a large company with a physical office, I didnât budge. Of course, I also expressed my regret for the timing and my gratitude for the opportunity. Instead of giving the traditional two weekâs notice, I yielded the power to pick my last day. It was the absolute least I could do. Having long stints on your resume is a nice plus. It shows your level of commitment. But staying in one place for years isnât an option for everyone. In fact, 25 percent of millennials surveyed by Deloitte in 2016 said they expected to move to a new job within 12 months. Leaving as quickly as I did, however, could be avoided. You donât want to create the impression that youâre not a committed person, and you donât want to leave wreckage in your wake. When looking for employment, applying and interviewing for multiple jobs simultaneously is ideal. This puts you in a better position to make informed comparisons between offers . Be prepared for some companiesâ hiring processes to move slower. Thatâs partly why I ended up in the position I did. Also, your interviewers might ask if youâre applying for other jobs. Theyâre trying to read your urgency. Saying yes (if thatâs the case) tells them that they might need to act faster to bring you on board. Youâll want to avoid the perception that youâre leveraging one offer for another, but try to remain open and honest during the process. Nancy Noto, former director of people at Mic , said that if your preferred company is slower to make an offer, tell them about the less desirable offer you have on the table. â Typically if the company is serious about the candidate, they will speed up their internal processes,â she said. If they donât, youâll have your answer about where youâre truly wanted. Treat your next series of job interviews as if youâre the interviewer. Ace the hiring managerâs questions , sure, but carve out as much time as possible to ask your own. Learn about the companyâs workplace dynamic, people and internal struggles. The last two times I received job offers, for example, I leveraged those offers into more time to research the companies. I requested to speak with a current employee over the phone and looked up employee reviews on Glassdoor . You might also consider spending a day shadowing colleagues in the office to get a better sense of how youâd fit. If your situation is unavoidable, you can do as I did and cut the cord on a new job, risking the fallout. But you might also consider a less damaging workaround. âAsk your future employer to give you some more time,â said Peter Yang, co-founder of ResumeGo . âTell them about your situation and that youâd like to stay with your current company for a couple [of] extra months to avoid any negative feelings or backlash.â Itâs not a perfect solution, but letâs face it: Thereâs no perfect solution for this predicament. Being transparent with your current and prospective companies can stop you from blindsiding them. Just make sure you protect your interests in the process and end up at the job thatâs best for your situation. This article was originally published on Student Loan Hero . Its a fact Your perfectionism isnt helping your performance at work
It's a fact Your perfectionism isn't helping your performance at work It's a fact Your perfectionism isn't helping your performance at work Perfectionists, heal thyself. Your excellence-chasing isnât helping your performance in the workplace.Harvard Business Review went through four decades of studies on perfectionism â" encompassing almost 25,000 people â" in order to find an answer to this question: âAre perfectionists better performers at work?âThe answer was no. In fact, perfectionism, they found, was a significant weakness at work. (Just like the coy answer to the classic job interview question). There are still positives about perfectionists: they strive to produce the highest level of work, put in longer hours, and theyâre more motivated and engaged. However, perfectionism comes with a boatload of negatives. Perfectionists have a higher likelihood to be inflexible, they set unreasonably high standards, posses an overly critical self-assessment of themselves, take a black-and-white view about their performance, and have a tendency to tie their self worth to their performance. Moreover, they also have higher levels of âstress, burnout, and anxiety,â according to studies. There are two types of perfectionists, identified by research. Excellence-seeking perfectionists demand high standards not only for themselves, but for the people around them. Those with this type tend to get more of the positive effects of perfectionism.Failure-avoiding perfectionists, on the other hands, are more motivated by the idea that they are not good enough, and that they will lose face if they arenât perfect. Those types tend to inherit more of the negative aspects of perfectionism. Of course, the two types can overlap in one person. Most interestingly, however, âresults showed that performance and perfectionism were not related to each other - perfectionists are not better or worse performers than non-perfectionists. Even employees high in excellence-seeking perfectionism were not better performers.âSo since nothing you can do will make a real difference, feel free to chill out â" and take some steps to curb your toxic perfectionism before it takes over your life.

Why you need to go to infinity and beyond
Why you need to go to infinity and beyond Why you need to go to infinity and beyond Years ago, Buzz Lightyear inspired me to seek âInfinity and beyond!âWhen my son was a little boy, we discovered the delightful Pixar animation âToy Story.â Our favorite scene was when Buzz Lightyear decided to prove to the other toys that he could fly.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! One afternoon after laughing through the various antics in Toy Story, I decided my son and I needed an adventure of our own. It had been a long work week and I was a bit tired out, but I wanted to do something fun with my boy.Back then, we lived amidst the towering redwoods of Northern California. I got the idea that my son and I should take a hike and explore the great outdoors. The sky was blue and the weather was clear and bright. After a quick lunch, we headed out. Some kind of majestic chairWe drove into the state park and found suitable parking. Shoelaces tied and with a spring in our step, we began our adventure. A friend who was visiting us from Oregon came along. He happened to be a survivalist and very experienced in the outdoors. As we trudged deeper into the forest our friend pointed out different animal tracks and plants of interest. My son took it all in with great interest despite his young age. We snacked along the way from our travel packs, downed some water and wandered into a bit of a clearing. In front of us was the huge stump of an old redwood, waiting for us like some kind of majestic chair. I glanced at my son and said, âCome on!âI hoisted him up and together we stood atop the flattened platform of the grand old tree stump. I struck a dramatic pose and announced loudly, âTo infinity, and beyond!â in my best Buzz Lightyear voice. My son followed suit with an outstretched arm and war cry of his own. It was one of those special moments when you feel great and simply enjoy the magic of life. Kind of like Buzz Lightyear.Thankfully, our friend captured the moment with his camera.Form an invincible hostObligations, responsibilities, and worries are always nipping at our heels. Sometimes it might even feel like the wolf is at our door.No one can predict when calamity may strike in our lives. But there are also moments of sheer delight and happiness. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.â- Helen KellerThat day so many years ago I could have easily poured a glass of wine, settled on to the couch and been consumed by some empty television program.Thankfully, I didnât. I found the energy to rally my little boy, invite my friend and traipse off into the redwoods. Into what became a magical land of sights, sounds, and possibilities. We all need to grab our loved ones and go to infi nity, and beyond. Doing so will change your life. Youâll rediscover whatâs really important. Youâll laugh and smile more. Your heart will fill with joy.âBecoming a father increases your capacity for love and your level of patience. His optimism and adventurous attitude ignited something in me. A renewed spirit and desire to go explore with my son.If I can leave you with anything it is this:Make time for loved onesFight for such moments. Why Did You Leave How to Address Past Employment
Why Did You Leave' How to Address Past Employment Why Did You Leave' How to Address Past Employment Parting can be sorrow if you explain it wrong in your next interview. Here are tips on positioning your resume (and your head) to provide a positive answer to the question: âWhy did you leave?âLike any hiring professional worth her salt, Jillian Zavitzâs eyebrows go up when she sees short work stints on a resume â" say, less than three months. Of course sheâll ask the job seekers to explain. The answers sheâs received speak volumes. From the professional side: âThe job wasnât suited to my needs?â Fine. âI was offered a better opportunity?â Youâre golden. From the unprofessional side: âMy boss was an ass.â âThey didnât pay me enough.â âI had problems with the management.âHear that buzzing noise? Itâs the sound of the paper shredder preparing to destroy your resume and your chances of being hired.âTheir answers⦠[help] me determine what kind of person they are,â said Zavitz, programs manager responsible for hiring at TalktoCanada.com, an online English language-training course based in Ottawa, Ontario. âAre they easy to get along with? Is it really the boss who is the ass, or is it you? Do they take risks? [Was the] once-in-a-lifetime opportunity an exchange? An internship? Travel? A lot of people who donât answer the question directly obviously have something to hide. If they stammer and make up a lie (you can tell) it makes me question their credibility, and I usually end up contacting that reference even if they arenât listed as a reference.âObviously, answering the âWhy did you leave?â question in a way that reflects negatively on you can be interview poison. Ladders talked to hiring managers, resume writers and career coaches to get some pointers on how you can prepare positive answers to that touchy question. Hereâs how to position your resume and interview responses to describe bidding a company farewell â" fondly or otherwise.Tackle it head-onDebra Benton, president of Benton Management Resources, a n executive coaching firm, suggests the best way to handle the question is to bring it up first. The trick is to stay away from being defensive by keeping your answer upbeat, Benton said.âMore like, ?Here I am telling you how wonderful I am, but Iâm wondering, are you curious why I left XYZ?â If they answer, ?No, we know that happens,â fine, itâs taken care of. If they answer, ?Yes, we were wondering,â then you can give your thought-out answer,â she said.Benton provided this sample of a positive spin:XYZ is a great organization, and I enjoyed my time there very much. They felt I was a real contributor to their organization, as evidenced by the two company awards I won. But, as you know, things change: New people come in, the economy, a new culture is put in place, and so forth. I could see that my work was done there and I needed to move onâ¦. So letâs talk more about where/how I can contribute to your organization.Your cover letter and resume can help answer the qu estionBarbara Safani, owner of the career-management firm Career Solvers, said she believes your resume should include a reason for the transition â" under specific circumstances: âIf it were due to a downsizing or other business reason,â she said, sheâll include the transition detail on the resume. Otherwise, if a client left for a political or personal reason, she doesnât include an additional explanation on the resume. The best place to handle the situation is in a cover letter, Benton said. She recommends direct statements like:It was the right time for me to leave XYZ. I completed (other words could be: reduced, presented, solved, accelerated, controlled, executed, established, expanded) my objectives. They benefited from my contribution. Their and my goals and objectives changed, and that is why I left.Safani also coaches clients to lead with a positive statement about the work experience, such as âI was fortunate to work for company XYZ for five years, and during th at time I contributed to a $20M increase in sales.â Next, she recommends clients explain the reason for the move.âIf the transition was related to a downsizing, I encourage the client to use language such as ?Unfortunately, a business decision was made to⦠(Here the candidate can explain the situation, whether it was a company closing, office relocation, position elimination, etc.)'âShe also encourages clients to cast the job loss as a part of a bigger corporate picture instead of making it personal. For example, donât say, âMy position was eliminated.â Instead say, âMORE THAN X number of positions were eliminated as a result of this business decision.ââIf the reason for the leave was political or personal, I coach the client based on the exact situation,â Safani said. âFor example, if it was political, I may recommend they say that management changed and they wanted to bring in their own team. If it was personal, I may suggest they say that the direction of the position changed and was no longer well-suited for (me).â
